Happy birthday Joel. You know, it seems like we were always doing different things growing up, but when I think back on everything that I did as a kid, you were always there. Things like taking swimming lessons at the pool at Grandma's old house, building bike jumping ramps on the front sidewalk, building forts in the back yard, building a pool table in our room, Scout Camp at Camp Raymond, you being the first one to reach me after the wild horse escapade (I especially remember how you threw rocks at the horse), hauling your drum set all over town, and even graduating from ASU at the same time. Maybe we weren't as different as we thought. In any case, I am glad you are my brother. I hope you have a happy day, and remember some of the fun things we have done over the last 39 years.
Love,
Nathan

What neat memories of your childhood! I am glad you have good ones as well as scary ones. We love you, Joel. Happy Birthday.
HAPPY BIRHTDAY!!!! wOW how old are ya now? that was fun to see the things you did when you were young. I never heard the horse story that is so heroic of you to throw rocks at the horse. I also remember you as being a very "cool" brother and very nice I broke your drum one time trying to reach something (I used it for a stool) I was so scared to tell you about it, but you didn't even get mad. And you used to make us try to catch dollar bills when you dropped them between our fingers then sometimes you gave us them.
Anyway have a GREAT DAY! And remember you are still "COOL":)

Happy Birthday Joel! I'll have to say most of my memories of you are with Stephanie. And those are some of the best memories with the both of you. I've had a blast going on vacation with your family. I may have missed out on your younger years but I'm the only sibling who has memories of Hawaii with you. And I have you to thank. Happy Birthday Joel your an awesome big brother and an awesome example!
Love,
Mary
Hopefully Tyson will wish you Happy Birthday in New York.
When I think of Joel memories I think of canvas Nike shoes that back then were a huge purchase for our family but Joel really really wanted Nike shoes. Then making those shoes last forever with duct tape, shoe goo, shoe goo and duct tape. Honda Scooters that ran forever on a tank of gas. With wood donated by the Southern Baptist Church construction site, Multi-story forts that ultimately met their fate, tipped over in a brisk wind, then that wood nailed together into wooden go carts with wheels of many sizes and rusty nails that we pulled from other boards then pounded strait. Animal barns. Drums wrapped in electrical tape, then duct tape, then contact paper. A time capsule that we burried in the south east front yard of the old St. Johns house that as far as I know remains there to this day...I think we even put money in it. A whole half gallon of ice cream that he had all to himself purchased from the Montoya's at Circle M, little league baseball, rescuing me from a dog attack, holding up Valley National Bank with panty hose on our heads and most of Nathan's memories except for the horse because I was too young to go on that trip although I remember Nathan's stitches. I'm honored to have you as my brother...Happy Birthday. - Daniel

Thank you all for the HBD memories....I am glad that all you can rememeber is the good stuff...(mom and dad don't read this part) Daniel by the way it's true I wanted Nikes, but the truth of the matter is that I never got them...Why should I when I had an older brother that had saved enough Wheaties box tops to get a pair of Classic Pony Plastic soled shoes....Of course the deal was that Nathan would get to wear them during the day and he graciously let me wear them for basketball games....I remember getting white shoe polish to clean them up a bit before each game...The funny thing about this is the fact that my shoes where so white they glowed... and because of the slick plastic I felt like I was ice skating....Needless to say this made it a bit tough to play defense...I would run to the end of the court to get in front of a guy and would just slide right on by...I know this impressed my coach and I'm sure earned me more playing time...It's true that If I had Nike Shoes that were all mine that I could save for B-Ball only and if we had a real live basketball hoop with concrete to bounce a real basketball on - I am sure I would be in the NBA right now....We'll mabe not I am a little to old I would have retired 5 years ago...But Hey! Birthday blogs would not be nearly as fun to read either...
We just got out of Tarzan...We sat right in front of Phil Collins...We also saw our ward relief society President there...I have not seen Shad or Tyson yet but hope to catch up with them tomorrow....I will look forward to a big birthday hug from the two of them.
Take care all you all...
I'll try to do better reminiscing on each of your birthdays...Sorry Mary...I'll find some old Hawaii photos of you...

Remembering those Pony's made me laugh. This picture is as close as I can find to what they looked like. I remember thinking I was pretty cool to finally have a pair of semi-name brand shoes to wear. It did take quite a few wheaties box tops though. Luckily, that and Cheerios are the only kinds of cerial Mom would buy (except for the occasional Trix treat we would get).
these comments make me laugh. It's so fun to read the memories you guys made. I would love to have a big pow wow with everyone and talk about everyone's funny memories. Although I don't remember a lot of them, I do remember those Sat. mornings that mom bought Trix, we had to get up extra early to get any because you boys could eat the whole box in one sitting. The milk too. And didn't care one bitt that we were stuck with the "Wheaties"
love ya
Rachel
I got Pony's too...simulated leather...from saving box tops. To this day I can't see a Pony shoe and not think of those. - Daniel
