Happy Birthday Nathan

Since you, as the oldest, has blogged everyone's birthdays, I thought me, as the youngest would blog yours! I'm not as good at the pictures as you are but you have to admit this one is cute. I don't even know this Nathan and I may not have the best stories to tell seeing that we only lived in the same house for less than what 2 years? But I know you now and I will say that you have been a great big brother to me even from far away! I hope you have a great birthday Nathan!
Love, Mary

Nathan,
I hope that you got my messages. When I looked at the blog and saw that you had been at the baseball game all day I understood why yoy were not answering. I would have posted a birthday blog but we have not been able to post anything lately and that's why you all haven't seen anything from us. I need to get with Erika and figure it out. Anyway, I'll get to the point.

Happy Birthday.
When I think of you a lot of things come to mind... The 2 headed calf at the hardware store you used to work at. (I was so proud that you got a job all by yourself), the Bry-ian's, I always had a crush on one or the other. Your singing group at school. Your trumbone, the day we dropped you off for your first year at boy scout camp, (I couldn't believe that you would beable to survive a week without us), you being mister social guy at Lake Powell and me watching every move. You making dinners when mom and dad went to conference. You, me and Bryan Hamblin at conference, your mission call and you really leaving and then coming home and me believing that I was the most important in your life, I had to work hard to share with Shauna. I remember the Koren music you brought home, and I thought that was the coolest ever, so I listened to it all the time. Can you see Nathan that I pretty much idolized you. You were the first to do everything and you did it so well. You set the stage for all of us. You have been a wonderful example to me of so many things and I will always feel a special kinship towards you.
I love you and hope that you have a wonderful birthday and father's day.

Love,
Rebecca

Happy birthday Nathan!!
And happy fathers day.
since on birthday blogs we do a "I remember..." here are some of mine.:)
You came out and picked me up after I broke my arm, took me in the house and wrapped a magazine around it to keep it still and straight until Mom and Dad could come home from Utah and take me to the doctor to get a cast. I remember you sitting in front of the t.v. watching a show with me. I was really uncomfortable yet you would not let me take the magazine off.
I remember when you came home from your mission you brought us all gifts and taught us how to use chop sticks and made me try kimche and sea weed. The kimche was Ok but the sea weed was gross but you wouldn't let me spit it out. I wanted to like it to impress you but it was just really discusting.(you aren't still eating that are you?)
Thanks for making me a tough kid :)
I love when you used to come to mom's and we would have a "mexican food night" where you did all the cooking and we ate it. Besides the fact you did all the cooking from scratch it was really good!!
You are such an awesome big brother. A hard job no doubt being the oldest of this clan, but no one could have done it better. Hope you have a great day for more reasons than one!
love ya,
Rachel

Dad & I remember some things you probably don't even remember. Like seeing you walk around, everywhere, with your S&H Greenstamp catalogue. That was your favorite book. You were not quite a year old and you were learning to talk by pointing out things you wanted to have from that book. We remember the time you were 16 months old and had croup so badly that we had to take you to the hospital. It was so hard to leave you there, but it was in the day when they didn't allow parents to stay overnight with their kids. We remember you and Joel and Daniel being the cutest little boys anyone ever saw and having people stop us on the street just to tell us that. Remember when you graduated from 8th grade and were one of the shortest kids in the class? And then, by the time you graduated from high school you were second tallest, only topped by the Mineer kid. I think of that sometimes when I see time whizzing past me faster than the speed of light, and I realize that we can't hold our children back, nor would we want to, really, even though sometimes we wish we could. You have been a wonderful son and a great big brother and we love you and wish you a happy happy birthday.

Happy Birthday Nathan! I'm glad to see that you get a blog too! We want to make sure that you get your moment to SHINE! You might get embarrassed too! I probably could tell some embarrassing story, but since you are double whammied today with Fath's Day and BDay, I'll just wish you a Happy Day. Hope you feel the love.

Nathan
I opened the blog and thought Wow. He's really cute. Most of my memories of when you came back from your mission but I do have a few prior. You singing in church, and at school. You playing the trombone at going to your concerts at the auditorium in St. Johns. I remember you coming home and bringing us the Korean dolls and Korean pajamas. They are still keepsakes and they always will be. I remember driving to Mesa with you and thought it was a really long trip because you listened to Korean music the whole time. I did think it was cool that you knew what they were saying though. I mostly remember you as a dad to baby Josh and how I thought I wanted to marry someone like you who was as fun and as gentle as you were with him. Im glad I am able to be your sister and grow up with such a wonderful brother. You did everything perfect. I love ya Nathan and hope someday we live closer together and get to spend more time together. Have a wonderful day and enjoy the birthday blog :)!

Happy Birthday Nathan...Kind of a rip off though because you don't get a separate father's day. Kind of like having a birthday on Christmas. Anyway I've got lots of great memories too but many of them I share with those who've already written. One though can't be missed. Not long ago there was talk of Joel's legendary Mitsubishi but when we speak of trucks in this family only one rises to the top in storied lore and that is the almighty backfireing, flame-spitting, music booming, hotwireing, jumpstarting "BEAST!!!" You were the first steward of the great one and I believe a great steward at that. My friends and I loved to ride in it because you souped up the stereo system and it played beautifully between times that we changed out burnt fuses. I remember one time we went to a school pep rally out at the sandwash, I was a freshman and you were a senior and on the way home the traffic was moving slow so every time we slowed down a little the truck would stall and we had to jump out, pop the hood, hotwire it to get it started then procede to the next stall. I have lot's of great memories of our childhood and youth but some of my favorite come of late. We absolutely love to visit you all in the great NE and we can hardly wait until we come a couple of weeks from now. When you think about it, nothing builds brotherly and family memories like incindiary joy. We hope you have a great birthday and we'll see you in a couple... - Daniel

Nathan, you drove the "beast"? Wow Jeremy and I used that truck too. Erika do you remember it? It took both of us to turn the steering wheel. good times. that must have been an old truck!

Esther said...

I remember just after we moved to Safford and Becca and I were desperate to go back to St. Johns, so dad let us drive the beast. I don't know how we convinced him that that was a reliable source of transportation for 2 young girls, but he let us go and I was petrified the whole entire trip. I thought for sure we would break down. But the Beast got us there safely and I can still remember standing at our house in St. Johns and watching it spit fire and roar. I was the only girl on the block who had a roaring, fire breathing, Beast-truck. My friends were so jealous.

Mary - thanks for doing Nathan's blog. He's leaving tomorrow morning at 4 to catch a plane to WI, so he'll probably write later.
Nathan & I have been married 19 years now -crazy, huh?? He's still a pretty good guy because he has to put up with me. Nathan will be one of the first people in line for the celestial kingdom & I'll be in the back. That's us in a nutshell. I have had so many people ask me how we ever got together. We are complete opposites in every way. I guess I add insanity to his life & he makes mine sane.
I tried to make up for the bday/fathers day duplication with enough presents for both so he wouldn't feel neglected.
Thanks for loving my husband. Family is very important to him.

It's the day after, I know....but I am going to throw out a blog anyway!

We were on the plane all day yesterday and had some time to think about the good ol days with Nathan between watching episodes of the office on the Ipod...

Lurch and Nelly, Robert Gould, Fort Building, Plastic sold Pony's, Bunk beds, Taped off territory in the room, Miniature Casio, Jump Man Junior, Mash, Rock Collections, Wallace and Ladmo, Swimming at Grandmas, Movie’s with John, Sam and Dianne, Brad, Cutting Wood, Hoeing Weeds, Planting Gardens, Fish eating Snakes, Tree Houses, Coal, All Night Tubing, Band & Choir, Horseback riding - maybe not!, camping, 50 mile hikes, running down mountains, Ditches, Craw-dads, Frogs, Wind-Carts, Stilts, Underground Forts, Magnifying Glass, Fire, The Beast that used more oil than gas, and many many more great memories....

Each of these probably has a great story you can tell your kids about....Thanks for being a great example to each of us. You have always been and still are a great older brother...

Hope you had a good birthday,

Joel

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I noticed, though, that everyone only thought I was cute in this picture. It is okay, I have come to grips with my old pudginess. I am thankful that Shauna fell in love with me when I had cuteness going for me. Don't let her fool you, she is the glue in this family.

Joel, you certainly dug up a bunch of old memories. You are right that each one of those has a story with it. How about these? Tree house, incense in Asay's trailer, VW pickup full of drums, Lake Powell, broken car in the middle of the reservation, basketball court full of rocks, milking goats, milking Wilhelm's cow, bike ramps, Coronodo rocket ship, small space between buildings in the back of the drugstore, baseball practice behind the house, leaches, skunks, chickens, turkeys, cows, rabbits, selling eggs, Sister Overson, Chico and the dumptruck, Taco (the dog), family school bus, Batman and Robin, rushing home from church to watch the Lone Ranger, big red finger in Round Valley, Bishop Lee, Bishop Brown, Bishop Hall, the sand wash, Witch Wells, and so many more...

Thanks again. I love you all, and appreciate the shared memories we have, even if they are from different dispensations of time. Thanks for only remembering the good things (except I know Joel remembers some not so good things...thanks for not mentioning them, Joel).

Nathan and Joel and Daniel, what a fascinating list of memories! Most of them sparked a memory of a story, but not all of them. Some day, I would love to hear the stories connected with those lists!
