RALEIGH CHILTON AND OLIVE MCKINNEY CHILTON
~Grandpa Hiatt's great great grandparents~
These are the grandparents of Nancy Ann Inman, Grandpa's grandmother on his father's side. It was for this grandmother, obviously, that my sister Nancy Ann was named. Raleigh Chilton, her mother's father, was born in 1801 in Virginia. He was the 4th of 9 children, Raleigh married Mary McKinney in Surry County, North Carolina in 1828, and they had one child. I think she died in childbirth, though I can't find any hard evidence of that. Her child survived and lived to adulthood. Raleigh then married Olive McKinney (a sister? No parental information is given about her or Mary), on December 5, 1830 in Surry County, and they were the parents of 6 children, two of whom died in childhood. That was not uncommon in those days, but still very heartbreaking for the parents of those children. Olive was born September 15, 1809, in Surry County. Frances Jane Chilton, Nancy Ann's mother, was the 4th of their 6 children. Raleigh died in April 1869, but there is no date for Olive's death. She was still alive in 1870, however, because in the estate files for Surry County, Olive showed up in 1870, so she was living there at that time.
STEPHEN RICHARDSON AND EREPTA WILDER RICHARDSON
~Grandma Hiatt's great great grandparents~
The name and family of Richardson, reportedly began in Britain, with Richard, Lord Belward. He had a son soon after the Norman Conquest of Britain, whose name was John. John took the name Richard-son as his surname. One of his descendants, Samuel Richardson, our ancestor, who was born in Hertfordshire, England, was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony of 1633. Stephen Richardson was born February 11, 1799 in Royalton Massachusetts to Timothy Richardson (1768-1831) and Sarah Towne (1770-1830). He married Erepta Wilder on February 13, 1825 in Concord Vermont. They were the parents of 9 children, of which, Elizabeth Melvina, Grandma's father's grandmother, was the 3rd. Erepta was born on October 4, 1802 in Concord Vermont. Her parents were Nathan Wilder (1774-1851) and Mercy May (1773-1831). Erepta was the 4th of 10 children. Stephen died in Waterloo, Iowa, on April 4, 1888, at 89, an unusually old man for that day, and was buried in the Union Cemetery of La Moille Illinois. So Stephen had fought for the Union in the War Between the States. I was glad to read that, because I thought the only Civil War Veteran in my family was Ephraim Puckett who fought for the Confederacy. Erepta died on July 8, 1899, also in Waterloo, Iowa. She was even older...97 years old. She was buried beside her husband in the Union Cemetery of La Moille, Illinois.

~OUR AUGUST~
What a lovely, relaxing month August has been. Just enough activity to keep us involved and not enough to wear us out. Our annual monsoon was a little late this year, starting near the end of July and going to the middle of August, so we even had some dramatic thunder storms and gully washers to add excitement to our month. These pictures are of the stormy skies in Mesa that Erika took.
We had time to attend some temple sessions and work on some projects. My project for this year, besides getting my 2018 blog book done, is to make portraits of each of the grandchildren. I decided to do the portraits in pencil instead of oil because it is so much easier to get them out and leave them out so that I can go back to them whenever I have a chance. With oils, I have to completely clean everything each time I work and have to have a huge block of time available to spend. With pencils, I can work for 10 minutes or 2 hours, it doesn't matter. However, pencil portraits are not easy. I'm finding that oils are much easier to work because they are more malleable and forgiving of my mistakes. But I'm slowly learning, although I seem to still make the same mistakes over and over. However, I'm really enjoying doing these pictures because it gives me a chance to reconnect with my memories of each grandchild from when he/she was a toddler. I'm doing them youngest to oldest. So far, I'm up to Crew. One of the biggest problems has been finding toddler pictures of the oldest grandchildren because those were all on my other computer and I can't find the disc or stick or whatever I put them on.
We started the month with a back-to-school weenie roast and swim party.
One of Jenn's projects has been making fun decorative collages. She made these for me with the pictures of our party. They're not just a collection of pictures. She makes them tell a story.
Melissa sent me this picture of me with Grandma Hiatt at the Hiatt reunion. I can't tell which year it was. My best clue is DeWitt in the background. He looks pretty young, doesn't he? She sent it on August 10th, the day of Grandma's passing.
When I was researching our ancestors for this blog, I found this picture of the daughter of Erepta Wilder Richardson, so, my great great grandmother. Her name is Elizabeth Melvina Richardson, Grandpa Brinton's grandmother. I'm putting it in to show that sometimes people smiled in their pictures. 😊
Ethan and Alex came to stay with us one day and Ethan put my pillow behind his head so he could be Grandma.
This is Dad, enjoying a wonderful gully washer that we had this month...lasted about 20 minutes.
My assignment schedule this month put me out after our shift a little earlier than Dad, so I go to the car and read while I wait for him. I couldn't resist yet another picture of the temple all lit up.
The Lisbon, Portugal Temple dedication was this month. We are so excited to be going there next year with Mary and Tyson on one of their Jones excursions. Can't wait!
The Alders came over to celebrate Brynlie and Camille's 14th birthday on the 16th...a day early so that Rachel could surprise them. She enlisted Mary to take them around town, ending up here for the party. They had delicious French dip sandwiches, salads and cake.
They surprised them with silly string!
Carson and Thomas have been helping with the lawn, which is so green and lush after our monsoon rains...hard to mow, that's for sure, but looks good.
Sunday evening, everyone gathered to decide how to do t shirts for the reunion in November. Poor Thomas, tried to accommodate everyone's ideas. They're going to be great!
We went to a session at the Temple one day and saw Jenn and our friend Mary Alyce Claridge there, so we invited them to lunch at El Charro. Thomas was on site, so he joined us.
On Carson's birthday, Thursday, the 22nd, they came to our house for a swimming party with some of his friends. The next day was his birthday dinner...Roman Holiday. Mary told me to warn Dad that it wasn't like his traditional Roman Holiday, it was more like Roman goulash. It was delicious though...Dad ate 3 helpings. In this picture, I was telling Carson to smile
Isabel wanted to give Logan a jean quilt for his birthday on September 1, so she (Mary) enlisted the local chapter of the sisterhood to get together and make it one morning.
We went to Gilbert for the Labor Day weekend, and got a very nice visit to Lydia from Harrison and Marlie.

~NATHAN AND SHAUNA~
Jovie is loving the Arizona heat a lot more than her Nebraska-conditioned parents are!
Hannah and Seth took a pre-school-starting trip in the midwest. They went to Mall of America in Minnesota, and saw this Jackson 5 mural in Gary Indiana.
They also went to the Wisconsin State Fair
And Chicago where they saw Hamilton.
One of the coolest of Josh's preservationist houses in Omaha.
Surviving the Arizona summer. This is the last one they'll have to survive. He graduates and goes home to Omaha in the spring.
Seth, making potato boats
~JOEL AND STEPHANIE~
Crew's Highland High School activity card
Levi has been busy and has had success selling houses. He found one for Shad's sister Sydney.
They spent some time at their house in Pine and caught these Javelina eating their windfall apples.
I'm glad to see the protective glass between Junie and the stingray.
Joel sent this picture of himself with Darrel and Brad Biggs at the Queen Creek Theater production of Mama Mia, in which Carrie was performing. She was the mother and the girl played the part of her daughter.
June obviously likes to eat out with her family
Face timing with Docker
She's going to follow in her grandmother's footsteps for sure.
~DANIEL AND CONNIE~
Their family laid some fence to corral their cows and it turned out to be a bigger job than they originally anticipated. The trailer was too heavy to cross the stream, popping off the trailer hitch and landing at the bottom of the creek, so they had to hand the panels, 100 of them, assembly line style to the other side. Then the kids stood on the back of the trailer so they could lift it back onto the hitch.
They encountered a huge snake, not poisonous, I think, and Connie got wounded: she fell down a ravine onto one of the hard panel wires that you have to use bolt cutters to cut, and it went into her arm. She also hurt her ankle when she fell. Aila wanted to be just like Grandma, so she had someone wrap a bandage around her leg and sat close by to keep her company. In this case, I'm sure it's true that misery loves company; having Aila there probably helped Connie feel better.
When school starts, football starts. Here is Shannyn with some of her school friends at a game.
Alonzo earns stars for work he completes. He is obviously very conscientious.
Bowling night with Alonzo and Raymond
Theo and Rosena enjoy the summer activities around St. Louis
Rosena had her first birthday on the 29th and celebrated it with a party. The theme was "apples" because she is the "apple of their eye." She was even dressed in red. Such a darling dress to get all cakey! And she really did. See the picture in the Smiles section. So perfect.
Theo has been on the potty train and is doing very well as you can see by his "potty poster."
~REBECCA AND SCOTT~
DeWitt spent some time at Lake Powell with Rachel Rose Holt's family.
Lillian and Kelin made a beautiful kitchen table for their new apartment.
They hiked to the top of Angel's landing in Zion National Park.
This is a collage that Rebecca had Jenn make of their grandchildren's visit last month.
Rebecca and Scott and DeWitt and Polly spent some time in Rocky Point this month and Rachel Rose joined them for a few days. One day they went deep sea fishing and although they caught fish, they also got seasick! Especially Rebecca. It took her days of being home to get over it.

Polly has come home to attend EAC and play tennis for them. Rebecca is glad to have her back...so is EAC.
Dallin and Sara and Parley spent some time in the Shenandoah River State Park in West Virginia
Also with her family there.
One day, Mary asked Rebecca to keep her little boys, and they had quite an exciting adventure! They swam, had a picnic, fed the bunnies, played with toys, rode scooters, and I can't even remember everything else. But when they were done, Ethan was exhausted!
Rebecca and Rachel went to Mesa to attend her friend, Jennifer Bushman's wedding.
~JEREMY AND ERIKA~
Precious little Victoria.
Erika and Jeremy have been working on their home renovation, making some huge changes and some small ones, all contributing to a gorgeous house. Notice the architectural details around the new door and windows. Fabulous!
Even little improvements like this little heritage cupboard.
They have been working on their bedroom. This picture shows the door to their room and the bathroom, which didn't even have a door. Then the new bedroom door and bathroom. For the finished room, see next month's blog. They finished it, including the wood floor, in September.
He's really becoming a master craftsman.
Jori and Daynen went to a game at Chase Field.
~RACHEL AND TONY~
They went to Mesa to attend the homecoming of their Alder cousin and this is when they ate together. They were all together except Logan, who was on a fire. The face you don't recognize is a cousin.
Isabel is surely increasing 😃 A sonogram of their baby boy.
She came over and enjoyed the downpour with us while she was waiting for her laundry.
This is the collage Rachel had Jenn make of their trip to San Diego.
Learning from the master baker.
Logan finally got home and Isabel is happy...for a little while, at least...until he gets called out again.
Rachel had a surprise birthday party for Brynlie and Camille at our house, a day before their birthday, so they would be sure and be surprised! It was just their immediate family, and us, of course.
Mary kidnapped them and blindfolded them and took them around town, ending up at our house to be surprised by silly string.
Opening presents
The next day, on their real birthday, they celebrated all over again.
Rachel went with Rebecca to Mesa to attend Jennifer Bushman's wedding.
Camille has asked if she can work to earn money for a car. She has two years to save up enough.
Logan's birthday jean quilt so far.
Sunday dinner at our house. We had Mary's and Thomas's families over this month as well, but believe it or not, I didn't take any pictures. Rachel took this one (obviously I didn't take it) and sent it to me.
The Alders came with 9th ward to do baptisms on a stormy Thursday night when we were at the Temple.
Rachel took this beautiful picture as they drove up.
When they were leaving, it was pouring rain. It was raining when I left too, but the security brother walked out with me, and gave me an umbrella. I asked him what they do when a whole group comes out in the rain. He said "they get wet."
They went for an after-temple-snack, which made it all ok.
We took Logan's quilt to Isabel so she would have it for his birthday on the first. This is her cute little apartment.
~ESTHER AND SHAD~
The collage Esther had Jenn make of her family in San Diego.
Marlie and friend
Levi found a house for Sydney and negotiated a sale. He brought a celebration cake to share the good news with her.
Brody celebrated his 10th birthday on the same day as Brynlie and Camille's 14th birthday.
Bridger is all set to play football as a sophomore. He's been practicing all summer.
Bridger is #52
~THOMAS AND JENN~
When you have a birthday on July 31st, you sometimes get to be featured in both July's and August's blog, depending on when you have your birthday party. Both Maya and Henry invited cousins and friends to celebrate Maya's turning 9 and Henry's turning 7.
Kirtlyn getting ready for school to start by having our resident hairdresser cut and style her hair
Jenn's collage of Kirtlyn and Thomas who are mentors in their respective schools.
August is Tip-a-Cop month at El Charro. Thomas took this picture of all the area law enforcement who participated in the event. They donate their tips to Special Olympics.
Kirtlyn made this pencil portrait. I am so impressed because it is her first attempt and I have been working on them for months and still am not as good as this. I think this is a tv series character.
They have a new pet...along with their dogs...a turtle.
One Saturday afternoon, Hyrum spent hours researching a timeline of early Christianity to the Restoration
They took a couple of Richins kids and went to the lake to enjoy their jet ski.
~MARY AND TYSON~
Registering Brianna in high school...a big step (for her mom); also a high school survival kit.
Jared had a school assignment to complete his family tree.
Brianna sang a solo in Sacrament meeting and Judy Lunt accompanied her. One of the perks of practicing at the Lunts' is having personal coaching by the maestro, himself. She sang I Stand All Amazed and was so so good. I snuck a video.
Our huge gully washer that was so much fun for us to watch, flooded Mary's basement. They had to dry it out for several days.
Helping the twins have a surprise birthday party.
Ethan's first visit to the dentist. He carefully watched Alex go through it first.
Mary promised these boys their own gallon of ice cream if they would dance every dance at the Deacon and Beehive dance. They actually did! Ice cream is a great motivator.
They got to go as part of Carson's birthday party on the 22nd.
We were invited to his birthday dinner.
I love it that Ethan likes to cuddle...sometimes even with me.
A day of adventure at Rebecca's
Happy bubble monsters
~MISSIONARIES~
Docker in Boston/Cambridge~At Harvard; Prudential bldg; I don't know what this building is
With his district; knocking doors; a Chinese man; a companion
Albert at the Golden Gate Bridge; It looks as if they found treasure.
More Golden Gate Bridge and his two companions. He was with a threesome for a while.
Some of the kids Harrison works with at the school for special needs kids on his mission.
~SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE~
I love this...remember it always.
Don't you love finding your child asleep over the scriptures?
Analynn wanted to bring in all the groceries in one trip, so she got creative...even hanging a bag on her hair!
For sure!
Jori is so tiny that when she gets tired...or misbehaves (?) they can just put her in the shopping cart!
Okay. This is Dad and me...totally and completely.
Alex, hamming it up to some of his siblings' music. He's definitely a star in the making.
And whatever Alex does, Ethan does. Notice the glasses.
Rosena is totally serious about demolishing her first birthday cake!
