Shortstop Cale Iorg plans to visit Arizona State on July 27 as he debates whether to resume his college baseball career or sign with the Detroit Tigers.
Iorg returned last week from a two-year Mormon mission in Portugal. He was Alabama's starting shortstop in 2005, hitting .280 with 38 RBI. Alabama, Tennessee and Florida State also are interested in Iorg, who lives in Knoxville, Tenn.
His brother played for Tennessee. His father Garth played for the Toronto Blue Jays for nine seasons and now is a roving instructor for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Tigers chose the 6-foot-2 Iorg in the sixth round (211th overall) of the major league draft in June.
Iorg would be a leading candidate to replace Andrew Romine as ASU starting shortstop. Others possibilities include Matt Hall, junior college recruit Marcel Champagnie and Mike Leake.
Leake was one of ASU's starting pitchers on a team that finished fifth at the College World Series. He hopes to be a two-way player next season and has experience as an infielder and outfielder.

Shortstop Cale Iorg committed to sign with Arizona State on Friday. Now he has to decide between the Sun Devils and Detroit Tigers.
Iorg was a Tigers' sixth-round draft pick in June. He returned from a two-year Mormon mission to Portugal on July 14 and quickly decided on ASU over Alabama, where he started in 2005, Tennessee and Florida State.
The Tigers have until Aug. 15 to convince Iorg, son of former major leaguer Garth Iorg, to go pro. Otherwise he could be ASU's starting shortstop for two years, replacing Andrew Romine.
The 6-foot-2 Iorg hit .280 with 38 RBI for Alabama before leaving on his mission. His father now is a roving instructor with the Milwaukee Brewers, whose spring training is in Maryvale.Iorg plans to make a visit to ASU next week.
Also Friday, outfielder Ike Davis received a second medical opinion on his left wrist that said surgery is not needed. His next step has not yet been determined.

He committed to go to college at ASU. The deadline has not passed for him to sign with a pro team, however. So if he signed the contract, and took the signing bonus, he would be inelligible for college. I do not know if he is still waffling, but the chance is still there. Most every college baseball player has been drafted at least once. Many get drafted every year.
